New Teaching Campaign “Jonah: The Reluctant Missionary”

Nineveh was a mega city in its day. It was known for pagan worship, barbarism, sexual immorality, and violence. It was one of the crown cities of the Syrian empire, an enemy state to the Jewish people. The Jew’s despised the Syrians.

One day, God called a man to go and tell the people of Nineveh of his goodness, and to repent of their sins, lest he destroy the city. This man’s name was Jonah. But instead of being obedient to the one who was sending him, Jonah instead ran in the opposite direction. Jonah would have rather seen Nineveh destroyed than its people saved.

The story of Jonah is one of a reluctant missionary, who is in equal need of saving as the ones whom he has been called to preach to. There are many great similarities between Jonah and the modern church. You and I have been sent with a purpose into our city, but like Jonah we often run.

This Sunday we will begin our new teaching series on Jonah: The Reluctant Missionary and study the man who ran in hopes of learning from him.
